THE REAL WORLD OF PHARMACY

Pharmacy goes far beyond the pharmacy counter.

Pharmacists work in hospitals, laboratories, communities, companies, technology, sports, research, and even help keep astronauts healthy.

Choose a door to keep exploring.

WELCOME TO COMMUNITY PHARMACY

This might look familiar.

Community pharmacists are often the medication experts you see in your neighborhood. But there’s a lot happening behind the counter.

They check prescriptions, answer questions, help people use medicines safely, give vaccines, provide health screenings, work with other healthcare professionals, and help patients take care of their health.

Dr. Cole has a prescription waiting. Want to help him get it ready for the patient?

YOUR PHARMACY MISSION

Follow the Prescription

A new prescription just arrived at Brightwell Community Pharmacy.

Follow it from start to finish and see if you can get it ready safely for the patient.

WELCOME TO HOSPITAL PHARMACY

The pharmacist is part of the healthcare team.

Hospital pharmacists work alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to help patients receive the right medicines safely.

They review medications, check doses and allergies, look for drug interactions, answer medication questions, and help the healthcare team make treatment decisions.

Remember Tyler? One small detail changed everything.

Tyler’s allergy was one problem a hospital pharmacist could catch.

But allergies aren’t the only thing pharmacists look for.

Think you can catch another one?

YOUR PHARMACY MISSION

Think Like a Hospital Pharmacist

Meet Maya.

Maya is 8 years old and has a fever.

Before Maya receives a new medicine, the pharmacist reviews her chart.

Look closely. Everything you need to solve the case is here.

STOP! WHAT DID YOU NOTICE?

The pharmacist hasn't approved the new medicine yet.

Would you let Maya receive the Tylenol?

○ YES ○ NOT YET

Why? Think about it before you keep going.

READY?

See what the pharmacist found

Maya already received acetaminophen.
The new order is for Tylenol.
The medication clue tells us Tylenol is a brand name for acetaminophen.
That means Maya could receive the same medicine twice.
NOT YET!

The pharmacist catches the duplicate and checks with the healthcare team before Maya receives another dose.

Same medicine. Two names. That's called duplicate therapy.

WELCOME TO COMPOUNDING PHARMACY

Sometimes medicine needs to be made special.

Most medicines are already made and ready to use. But sometimes a patient needs something a little different.

Compounding pharmacists can prepare medicines in a different form, leave out an ingredient a patient can’t use, or make a strength that isn’t already available.

Every patient is different. Sometimes their medicine needs to be different, too.

YOUR PHARMACY MISSION

Make It Special

Three patients need help.

Each one needs their medicine changed in a different way.

Can you match each patient with what the compounding pharmacist could change?

CHECK YOUR MATCHES

THE FORM
Since Leo can’t swallow tablets yet, the pharmacist could prepare his medicine in a form he can take, such as a liquid.
THE INGREDIENTS
The pharmacist could prepare her medicine without the ingredient she can’t use.
THE STRENGTH
The pharmacist could prepare the specific strength Sam needs.

MIXED. MEASURED. MADE FOR THE PATIENT.

Compounding pharmacists use science, careful measurements, and problem-solving to prepare medicines for patients with special needs.

Another pharmacy mission complete!

WELCOME TO PATIENT CARE

Pharmacists care for people, not just prescriptions.

Pharmacists spend time talking with patients about their medicines, their health, and the questions or concerns they may have.

They explain how medicines work, help patients understand how to use them safely, look for problems, and work with patients and their healthcare teams to find solutions.

Sometimes helping starts with simply listening.

STEP INTO THE PHARMACIST’S OFFICE

Remember the patient with all those medicines?

He was confused and had questions.

The pharmacist didn’t make a medicine or fill a prescription.

He listened. He explained. He helped the patient understand.

Pharmacists use what they know about medicine—and what they learn by listening to the patient—to help people make informed decisions about their health.

WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO ASK YOUR PHARMACIST?

Good questions help pharmacists take better care of you.

WELCOME TO MANAGED CARE

One pharmacist. A really big picture.

Managed care pharmacists use information about medicines and groups of patients to help make healthcare safer and more effective.

Their work can shape how medicines are used and help improve care for people they may never even meet.

How many people can one pharmacist help?

LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the pharmacy world, helping patients doesn't always happen face-to-face.

Managed care pharmacists use what they know about medicines to look for patterns, solve problems, and help make decisions that can affect entire communities.

A pharmacist's knowledge can travel farther than you might think.

If you could make healthcare better for 1,000 people at once, what would you change?

Where new medicines begin.

Pharmacists in the pharmaceutical industry help discover, study, and improve medicines before they reach patients.

They use science to learn how medicines work, study their safety, and help turn new ideas into treatments that can help people.

How does an idea become a medicine?

If you could help discover a medicine of the future, what would you want it to help people with?
